Indonesia's currency neared a record low against the US dollar on Wednesday as worries over slowing growth and rising government spending shook investor confidence in Southeast Asia's biggest economy.

Indonesia's central bank stepped into the currency market to defend the rupiah on Tuesday, as growing concerns over politics, government spending, and capital flight pushed the rupiah to its lowest levels since the Asian financial crisis.
